Fills/errors ? in 1955-S LC

    cents and turkey 026.JPG cents and turkey 027.JPG my first on the date and mint mark!... many things were going wrong in the 50s especially 55 and 57.

    They are called "die chips." Planchet metal filled the parts of the die that broke away.

    That's a real odd chip at the bottom of the S. You don't see that often at all. I have a memorial cent where the bottom of the S in PLURIBUS is chipped. This is the only other time I've seen an S chipped like that. The chip in the date, I think you're right, those dates seem to have more chips than normal. Congrats on the unique find.

    Why do you ask? Do you think there is? Nothing suspicious about Die Chips. They are what they are.

    Die chips are just as common as chocolate chips, potato chips and cow chips.

    For a long time I segregated these "filled letters" die chips and sold them in rolls on eBay for a bit of premium.
