No, the coin appears as a typical clean gem grade war nickel with somewhat satin luster. My expected grade was MS65 5FS; never in a million years did I think this coin would details grade.

Well that is disappointing (and I don't even own the coin!)

That sucks Lehigh, I don't see anything that would detail the coin, let alone a wheel mark.

I like my coins raw. Coins just aren't a business for me. If I did, I would try PCGS. I am not sure about CACG yet. Good luck. You are better off selling that as a raw gem than in that slab.

I have always been an NGC guy, for decades now. I never liked the look of the clear plastic PCGS holders, loved the way toned coins look against the white NGC holders, and as a toning enthusiast, have an affinity for the star designation. In addition, I never liked the way that PCGS ranks their registry sets, or the fact that they exclude NGC coins. As a result, all of my registry sets are in the NGC Registry. Because of this, I gravitate towards NGC graded coins and almost exclusively use NGC for grading of my raw coins.

I have been working on a registry set of war nickels where each nickel must be a "homemade" coin, with me as the submitter. As you can imagine, finding a raw 43/2-P is not easy. This is the 2nd one I have found, and now NGC has details graded them both. I need the coin to be graded in order to include it in my registry set, which currently ranks 27th with the coin as UNC Details.

My only recourse was to crack the coin out and submit to PCGS, which is exactly what I did. When I get the coin back, I will let everyone know how I fared.

I have always trusted NGC with Jeffersons and Buffalo's. And agree that the toned coins look impressive in an NGC slab.
When we talk about a wheel mark?
This is an example of what I think they call a wheel mark. When you rotate the coin under the light, the luster changes sharply.

It is raised die striations, something that didn't get lapped from the die face.

Ps the Kennedy above is an extreme example.

Sorry Lehigh what I posted isn't a wheel mark.
Took a while to find photos. I still can't see anything in their photos or yours.
What I posted and a wheel mark look pretty close to the same IMO.

Trying PCGS seems like the best course of action here.

I voted MS-64 Non-FS. Wouldn't the flat spot above the C preclude it from being 5 full steps? Off hand I can't remember what the rules were for these.

Are they calling that little scuff on the reverse up top under the E a wheel mark? I've got a worn 82-CC Morgan with a circular scuff ring in the center of it that's the most blatant wheel mark you've ever seen. I never would have imagined this coin would have came back with that designation! Will be interesting to see what PCGS does with it.
Sometimes I feel like it's a wonder any coins get through straight graded as many designations as there are and as strict as they can be. This ones a shame. I think if you re-submitted it loose enough times it'd straight grade. Maybe even on the next try.

    Edit: Here’s a wheel mark.

Have you ever submitted to a TPG? A more appropriate question would be how many months has it been. (Its likely still there) :D

Just one thing. If they give it a grade you've got an ethical dilemma on resale if you neglect to disclose the NGC opinion on it, as NGC is a top-tier grader. Don't tell PCGS, you don't want to lead them. But you have to tell bidders, you go to sell.

Agree with ddddd resubmit to PCGS. There's no wheel mark. They
just ripped you off on the grading fee at NGC.

I need to photograph it before the reveal, I will pick it up later this week.

He's being cheeky with you, he's my brother and he submitted it for me. I have the NGC account, he has the PCGS account.

I am under no obligation to broadcast "fake news" cause that is what that wheel mark grade was.

Yep, there is no wheel mark, and the reveal coming soon.

Late to the party on this one but I voted 65FS before seeing that it detailed. Curious to see the PCGS results.

How much rank will improve if this crosses as a 65FS back to NGC?

I had this coin at MS65FS, but PCGS agreed with you guys and @RonSanderson.

And for me, total vindication after that ridiculous grade by NGC.

In the details grade it was worth 397 points, in MS66FS it is worth 3,103, netting me a gain of 2,706 registry points and vaulting me from 28th back into the top 20, at 19th. Now all I need to do is make an MS67 5FS 1944-P and 1945-P and I will be up with the big boys.
