I thought I would share this Ebay auction I saw today: https://www.ebay.com/itm/116394190653 It sold for $30 plus $4.95 shipping. The auction states: "From my brother's estate collection - damage from Sassy, his beloved rottweiler." I thought it was a good example of the saying: "Buy The Coin, Not The Holder".
I saw this one years ago. Note the "L" that has been scratched in above Ms. Liberyt's head. PCGS graded it MS-63, and CAC approved of it. If you were buying the holder and the sticker, it might be a good deal. If you are buying the coin, not so much.
It’s from the famous Loosenup collection, so the L is OK. Just like the D stamped on the Dexter 1804 dollar graded PR65 by PCGS. Cal
My first impression, scrolling down and seeing this, was "looks like the dog got to it" and yeah, that seems right.
Years ago my beloved dog chewed the corners on my record albums. She has long since pasted away and I still miss her. When I came home and saw what she had done I didn’t have to say a word. She knew by the look on my face. She could do everything but speak English. She understood English but couldn’t speak it. She could open and close doors. In fact, she could do almost anything she wanted or put her mind too. I still have the record albums with the chewed corners.
Shipping and re-holder would be more than he sold it for. I would have just cracked it out and sold it raw. Had a good laugh. Somebody's dog got a hold of it. Haven't seen that before.
That is my big gripe with grading companies. Unless these marks were made officially by the government, I still see it as damage, no matter what provenance it has. A coin may be very rare, but there are several I've seen that shouldn't be in straight graded holders. I suppose at some value those "details" are no longer a factor. I think it was heritage that sold a world gold coin last year that had been clipped, plugged, etc and I'm assuming only because of rarity it was in a straight holder. I commented on the post wondering why with no response. I guess I shouldn't worry much as I doubt I'll ever have a coin rate enough that the damage no longer matters!
I agree completely. Ownership, provenance and value should have no place in grading ... only the coin itself should matter. That $1 coin that John posted and the Dexter 1804 dollar should have grades of Genuine - Graffiti. Cal
I disagree with cracking and selling raw...that NGC MS69 label had to help with the sale about as much as the story
