The 38 D was hoarded as the last coin of the Buffalo series, and thought it would become a rarity. Walter Breen said that they were hoarded in the thousands of rolls. They were often traded in rolls among dealers until the 1960's when collecting became widespread. I believe in 62' one was found with a distinct D and S MM. The news went wide spread as no one had ever noticed a multiple MM before. What had happened is the dies were dispersed to Denver and San Fran, with their respective MM's already punched in to the working dies. Not knowing that the 38 was to be struck in Denver only and there would be a design change. San Fran was ordered to add a D mint mark and send them to Denver for use. There are 5 OMM for the year. Including a D/D/D/S http://varietyvista.com/03 Buffalo Nickels/OMMs 1938-D.htm Same coin as post 2.
I've posted both of these before. Found in the clean out pit below the pulper at a recycled newspaper paper mill in the late 1970s. Received in change a few months ago, still laying on my desk.
Well, I've got a few, of course none a nice as have been posted, but I'm thankful for the ones I do have. Here are a couple of half dimes that I've got pictures of, and one 1913 S Buffalo type 1, and I had to look for a while before I found it.
