Any recommendable dealers of ancients and/or medieval coins that will be or might be at the FUN show in January? I've never been to a FUN show before or anything of its size really, and I don't really want to be checking each and every table for ancients (I dont mind a little wandering around, though). Thanks!
In December they will publish floor plans with locations of the various dealers. You should be able to tell via the directory what their specialties are. Just google Ft Lauderdale FUN Show 2017 and follow the links.
Nice, was hoping there would be something like that. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for that directory. Thanks! For anyone, are there specific dealers from previous FUN shows that you can personally vouch for? Any to avoid? I realize it might be too early to tell which dealers are going but I'm hoping to get an idea of what to expect.
I'd expect that the info will be posted very soon, so you should check the FUN Show site regularly. http://www.funtopics.com/fun-convention.html I hope you have already made hotel accommodations because time is running out. Keep in mind that January is the height of the tourist season. Chris
In 20 years of going to the FUN shows I have not run into a full time ancient dealer I would want to avoid. I would check them all out and see who you feel comfortable talking to and who has the things you are looking for. This year we should have some of the high end dealers from Europe because the NY international is on a different weekend.
Thanks for the link! Fortunately I live only 25-30 minutes from Ft. Lauderdale so I don't have to worry about hotels or flights. As a college student that can't afford to make long trips, Orlando has always been out of the question for me, so it is very fortunate for me that FUN is going to be a lot closer this time around.
Okay! I'm in Ft. Myers so O-Town and Lauderdale are about the same distance for me, but this will be my first time at the show on the east coast. Question: Since you're in the vicinity, is there a place that rents metal detectors in the event there is a good storm in the Atlantic? Chris
Unfortunately I don't metal detect (yet, maybe in the future I will, especially since I want to add pirate-era Spanish coins to my collection), so I don't know. Perhaps @Sallent might know? He's in Miami so he might have an idea.
There will be an ancients and foreign section, so all the ancient dealers will be grouped together. I suspect those in attendance will include: Pegasi, Herakles, James Beach, Time Machine, and Nilus (these are the "regulars" who rarely miss FUN). There were 8 ancient dealers at 2016 Summer FUN. Since the January show has a much larger bourse, and with no conflict with NYINC, I hope to see at least 8 ancient dealers, if not more.
I've dealt with Pegasi in the past. All good. There was a fella named Chris with a firm called Sentry Box Numismatics who I liked.
@cpm9ball Aloha Watersports in Fort Lauderdale rents metal detectors. I don't know if a permit is required or not.
In most coastal areas in the US (Jekyll Island, GA near me being an exception), it is legal to detect on the beaches between the high and low water marks. Of course you'll want to verify this in whatever locality you might visit. Note also that wet salt sand is very tricky to detect in with many machines, due to false signals. It often requires tinkering with the sensitivity setting on the machine to overcome, unless you rent or buy one specifically made for the purpose, or which has a salt water setting.
