Any suggestions for a coin inventory program?

    Hello all,

I have a couple of questions:

First, how does everyone keep track of their coins? Do you write it down on paper? Do you have a computer program that does it? Just curious to know what people do.

I'm looking for a computer program that can be used to make an inventory of one's coin collection. I know that they exist, but do not have much knowledge on the subject. Can anyone make a suggestion? Are there any that are linked to the web and can tell you how much a coin is worth, etc? Or even if a coin you are looking for pops up on Ebay? Are there any that allow you to put a picture with the coins information?
I'm interested in hearing what ya'll prefer...

    Thanks for your time!

A lot of people just use a spreadsheet. It's not fancy but gets the job done. :computer:

I use a timekeeping book and a pen. Low tech, but it travels nicely.

Excel is probably the least complicated.

Coin Elite is pretty easy - but the yearly upgrades(which you do not need to do) are something like $20. Excel was just getting to complicated - this made it easier to me.

Excel is the most versatile way to go. You can make it as simple or as sophisticated as you want. I even have a price look up in mine. However, it sounds like that is not your bag.

Take a look at Heritage. It is free to join and the "MyCollection" is also free (middle left on the home page). It will give you prices (6 sources), notes, dates (as in purchased), folders, it totals and prints. You can't insert a picture directly, but there is a spot for links. All-in-all, not too bad for free.

For now, I keep a log book of my inventory. When I buy a new computer, I will worry about transferring it all to a spreadsheet.

Ok, dumb question here. I have Windows XP. I can't find Excel. Is it something that should come with my software and I'm just not looking in the right nooks, or is it something I have to download?

As old-fashioned as I am with my timekeeping coin log, I'd also like to maybe have a digital copy as well.

It does not NORMALLY come with you system. You have to buy it extra. $50 - $200+ depending on the version. From the sounds of that, you would be better off with a program - or look at Heritage.

Now that you mention it, I don't remember XP coming with it either. Does Vista come with it? I also heard Vista is worthless.

If you have it, it will be listed under Programs - Microsoft Office. If Microsoft Office is not listed, then you don't have it.

Personally, I always preferred Coin Elite to Excel - it was much, much easier to use.

Microsoft office is something that you have to buy so you might not have it---most computers do come with MS Works. If you have that you might be able to do the samething as I hear that it also has Spreadsheets.

There is also Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org/) you can download and use for free. It has a word processor, a spread sheet program, a database program, and maybe some other stuff. I use to use it in Linux and it's pretty good - especially for the price :kewl:

I have CoinManage 2007. It's not bad but the built-in coin prices are unreliable.
