Seriously? Key date in high grade, but oh my goodness. Seller is asking just under $500.

I'd have to see it in hand as the pic detail isn't that good but it could be a severe weak strike

Look at the dentils, rims face, fields. That's heavy wear.

Not necessarily. Its been played with but it could be a die adjustment strike of sorts. Look how almost every high point is flat and lacking detail. It was either whizzed or it is a severe weak strike or the dies weren't properly spaced. Maybe it was whizzed and the UNC is a mistake. I'm just saying that from these images it is unclear what's going on

Obvious wear on the hair, no breast feathers, wear on the cap.

Yikes! I'll admit that I'm not the best grader by any means, but even I can tell that the coin looks more like an XF than an UNC. I wonder if that's a mechanical error on PCGS's part?

My guess: Fake slab or someone tampered with the slab to insert this piece.

I would second the possibility of a fake/tampered slab--I hope that wasn't actually PCGS hahaha

Boy I sure hope you're right ! I mean yeah, they grade to ridiculous standards nowadays, but even I don't think they're that bad !

That coin is barely VF details.

Interesting. The serial checks - no auction records - and the barcode scans correctly. I see no evidence of tampering at the pixel level of the images. Really, really fishy.

    Established seller?

I find it hard to believe that it is the result of a weak strike. Maybe PCGS was having an office party that day.

So it sold for $60 on Great Collections. Better pics. Still think it's UNC, @Cascade or anyone else?

Much better pics. Looks like it was XF/AU then whizzed poorly. Pcgs defenatly dropped the ball on this one

I think they would call this a mechanical error. If this were a true UNC details coin, and not a VF or whatever, it may be worth somewhere around the asking price, maybe...

Yeah. The wrong code was probably entered in the computer

I can't believe Ian accepted the piece as a consignment. I would have refused it.

To my mind, from the GC pics I'm seeing a trial strike (or something) which shouldn't have left the Mint. It's just flat, not wear, with what sure looks like remaining shine in the tighter areas. If true, I'm not sure there would have been enough pressure in the strike to create what we call "luster" in the fields.

Can't say I'm positive, but there's evidence in GC's images of why PCGS might have thought that way. You'd think they'd cover their butts by putting "Weak Strike" on the slab or something. :)

So my gut instinct could have been correct. Nice new avatar BTW ;)

I changed to whizzed only due to the hits seeming to be rounded at the edges from the better GC pics
