I am looking through some Austrailian coinage, dates 1899 through 1950 provided to me by a friend. I am an avid US collector and have no reference material for world coinage. I have various denominations and a grading guide, metallic content, etc would be greatly appreciated if anyone has one. Thanks!
Are some of them gold? Because otherwise they didn't make any Australian coins until 1910. There's a lot of key dates, especially in the early years. The best thing to do to get an idea of rarity and value is go to the NGC website and put in the coin and you will see a list of the whole series come up, so it's easy to view all at once. For example, here's the 3 pence: https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/australia-threepence-km-24-1936-cuid-1044946-duid-1216695
I would suggest getting the Krause book, but I see it's going for lots of $$$ these days. https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/2019-standard-catalog-of-world-coins-1901-2000/18645853/item/33810337/ Maybe you can find an older edition. I got mine years ago but it was like $25.
In all honesty, I have not looked too much at them. There are about 50 coins. The co-worker who provided them had them all in zip lock bags with pieces of paper identifying them, most read "Australian" and then the numeric value. I could have sworn earliest date was 1899, but then again, may be from another country. Thank you all for the resources. I'll dive right in!
I was just wondering if it might be Austria and not Australia as they are very similar names. You see a lot of Austrian coins from around 1899.
