I figure a lot of you coin friends think like me and would like a decent Titus as Augustus, so I pushed myself to win this in Noble Sydney auction. These auctions are not like your normal US or European type auctions as they run over three days in segments, probably only about a quarter are ancients, with some lots not even displayed but have multiple coins with only a description. Anyway for once I got to bid in the afternoon instead of 2-3 am, on overseas auctions. It went down to the wire but here it is Titus, 79 AD, denarius Rome 3.41gm, radiate figure on rostral column, S2509, RIC 10, RSC 272, Good very fine, some mint bloom around letters.
Sweet snag, AA => I love the reverse ... and I always love seeing the back-assward legend (congrats) Oh, and here are my only two examples of this happy fella ... ... ummm, it seemed like Titus loved animals ...
Nice catch! The auction had a coin that interested me. It was advertised as an ancient fake, but a really neat one? https://www.noble.com.au/auctions/lot?id=371117 I would love to have an EID MAR, but I was not willing to bid much for one that looked so far from a genuine one.
Thanks, I am surprised that you guys are watching that auction, do you think they are a little bit weird with the lots that have no photo but only a description? it is like having to go from San Francisco to LA to view the coins.
Yes $800 is a lot for such a worn coin, but could be genuine as the wear changes the original look so much.
Very nice pickup! I love the portrait. I believe Noble doesn't always have ancients in their auctions. In any case I totally missed this one.
That is a very nice Titus denarius with a well styled portrait. The condition is also very good, you can even see Titus' beard and the winkles on the forehead. Great addition to your collection, Ancient Aussie! Here is an example of this coin found many years ago. Pity it is in poor condition.
Wonderful posts everyone!! I absolutely LOVE the OP!! What an incredible portrait!! It seems to incorporate features of all the Flavians on one coin. Huge congrats @Ancient Aussie !! I'll just add this denarius of Titus and friend I picked up a while ago....
Thanks Mikey Zee and all of you for your kind comments, that's a really nice coin as well, that one would be about 80 AD celebrating the opening of the Colosseum, correct me if I am wrong.
https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=289037 Perhaps you would prefer to spend $4500 on this one which included 'active corrosion' in the listing?
I can't get through to the Noble Sydney site. What did that Brutus go for?? Very nice Titus by the way!
