Mat, Here is another piece that I am proud of. I bought this piece earlier this year and was super excited to get this. It is a Peru War of Independence issue 8 Reales dated 1822. It was then countermarked by the Royalist with a Crown and date 1824 below, which you can see part of the date "82" in the palm tree at 6 o'clock. It was then later countermarked in Guatemala in 1841-2 with Type IV countermark using hinged dies. I found a listing for a piece with no image from 1919/20 that describes this piece exactly. I think it is the same piece as this is the only example that I know of with this combination, but since there is no image I can't confirm this. At any rate this piece is really cool and looks much nicer in the hand than from the image.
Some medievals I picked up at a great price. Charles VIII (1483 - 1498 A.D.) 26mm 1.98g Duplessy 587 François Ier (1515 - 1521 A.D.) 24mm 2.48g Duplessy 835 LOUIS IX dit Saint Louis (1245-1270 A.D.) Denier tournois O: + LVDOVICVS REX Kreuz. R. +TVRONVS.CIVIS (N bouleté) / Châtel tournois .89g 17mm Duplessy 193
Nicely done, I think that its great that you have the Duplessy numbers on them. That is a great reference book if you are studying hammered French coins. Another great book for early French is "The Silver Coins of Medieval France (476-1610 AD)" by James N. Roberts. It gives a lot of good information plus lots of images(though they are only line drawings). At any rate nice acquisitions.
Nice find, congrats. I've been acquiring these French Blancs only because they were affordable. If they had better legends on the flans, then I probably would have passed.
Mat, This is a hobby and as long as you are having fun it with and maybe even learning a few things that is all that really matters, right? I am a collector at heart even though I have not always collected numismatics. So for me collecting coins is the best way I know how to "save" money. You don't have to buy these big money investment type coins to build a really neat and interesting collection. I know that even if I lose money on every piece that I buy at the end when I finally do decide to sell it will be one lump sum....hopefully. At any rate sometimes the view is a bit skewed when looking at all of the expensive numismatic items and people lose site of what this hobby is really about, Money and the history that is involved around the money. There are Ancient Kings of the Axumite Kingdom that if it wasn't for their coinage we wouldn't even know about them. Many times coins tell a really interesting story about what was going on at the time of issue, you just need to learn how to decipher what it is telling you.
very cool and interesting I have several counter stamped coins as I love them but not any of these. thanks for sharing.
This is a nice little British silver cache that came back from WW2 with my wife's Grandfather, along with many, many others. They have sat in a tin ever since. We are just now starting to go through some of it, little at a time. All are 1942, and most of the 3 Pence are in great shape, au-unc ( I think)
