Counterfiet quarter? What do I do with it?

Hello! I recently found this forum after I found this thing in my change jar. It's really unusual and I'm 99% sure it's a fake/counterfiet.

When I first found it it was EXTREMELY shiny, like someone had chrome plate it, now you can see it's tarnished from age a little, I'm not sure if it's silver. I doubt it because it's a 2008 mint design and I'm pretty sure silver quarters stopped being made a really long time ago. It is also magnetic! Very, very slightly magnetic, it doesn't stick to the magnet like iron, but being put on a big magnet you can see the very slight paramagnitism.

There is also no copper band, which really tipped me off to this being fake, you can see it in the photo below compared to a real quarter. It is also very, weird to hold. Akin to holding a real butter knife and a plastic replica of one I guess. (my scale is pretty old and may not be 100% accurate)

    Any ideas?

    It's a real Quarter that's Plated.
    Just spend it.
    That's my honest opinion.

We/I as collectors have seen plenty of these

    Welcome to CT, sploosh!
We see very many plated quarters here. Most people posting them think they've found the holy grail, a quarter on a 90% silver planchet. Some will also argue that they are right and we are all wrong when we tell them the truth about their coin.
To the best of my knowledge, you are the first to report one as fake.
You have a good eye, sploosh. I hope you keep looking and keep asking questions here. It's great to have you.

    Agreed!

Welcome to the neighborhood, @sploosh !

If you could turn back the clock to a mere 8 years ago and tune in to The Coin Vault or Home Shopping Network, you could find entire sets of these plated coins (with gold, silver or platinum finish) being sold for ridiculous prices. Unfortunately, when the suckers.....er.....I mean the collectors.....learned that they were only worth face value, they went out and spent them as fast as they could.

    Chris

PS. The US Mint did produce 90% silver versions of these coins, but they were struck at the San Francisco Mint (S).

Ask yourself why would someone bother making a fake of a year that is not rare. Other than that thanks for showing it! And welcome to Coin Talk!

Welcome to C.T. I have all ways loved the looks of a complete set of gold plated state quarters, but yes, only worth face, unless someone likes the look and is willing to pay a little extra for it. Yes, the tv shopping shows really overcharged for them, as they do for most everything. I find the shows to be entertaining, and a decent price guide. Anything they sell, you should be able to buy for less than Half of what they charge. LOL.

Back in about 1998 I recall reading an article in Coin World about counterfeit 1984-dated quarters being circulated (I believe in the northeast but can't recall). They were of pretty good quality as well. If they could be made and distributed in quantity for less than 25 cents each then it was profitable for the individual(s) to bother to do so.

    Buy another quarter with it

The fact that it is slightly magnetic would tend to indicate that it was plated with nickel.

1125161221.jpg Do you think this was painted gold or some kind of electroplate?
