I recently purchased this 1970-s large date, DDO at auction for $50, and I can't tell if it is a 101 or 103 variety. It is PCGS graded, but it looks like it must have been the earlier grading system that didn't account for the variety. Can anyone offer some help?

First, the holder is fairly new.

The posted photos are essentially useless and are of no real help in determining the variety, but the chances of being DDO-001 are slim to none. Both mentioned varieties are listed in cherrypickers and have FS numbers which, as far as I know, PCGS will attribute and properly label, so with this in mind, and again without being able to see the coin in detail, I'd have to guess its neither and most likely one of the lesser doubled dies for this date and mint. The label itself seems to suggest as much.

If you have the coin, your best bet may be to sit down and try to identify it yourself. Below is a link that should be helpful to you, or if you can post clear photos, obv and rev, perhaps the board can help you do so.

Thanks so much. I do have the coin, but I don't know how to take close-ups. It's hard to see any notable doubling.

You're very welcome, and I'm sorry I couldn't offer you a definitive answer.

Even though you're not sure how to take detailed photos (would you like to learn?), I still hope you try to attribute it using the provided link. It would be a great exercise and learning experience. Give it a try and if you get stuck, don't be afraid to ask for help. :)
