I was curious if there was a comprehensive list of numismatic items (currency, coins, tokens, silver rounds, whatever) that included a horse or horses in the design? I think as a subset or general subject of coins to collect I'd like to kind of focus on equine items (in addition to my regular items, not instead of). Ever since working at a horse rehab farm (back in 2012, daily, for 1.5 years) and getting to know, help, and train many horses, horses now have a special place in my heart. It also helps that my wife is a horse lover, too. I've seen some coins, rounds, and bullion for sale that have the year of the horse on them (with nice designs), and a few non-US mints that have horse stuff, etc.... .... but does anyone know of an actual or "official" list of horse coins or currency that depict a horse? I know I could go to each major online dealer (APMEX, JM Bullion, etc) as well as Numista and do a search for "horse", but I'm thinking there's a list out there somewhere. Right? Or maybe I'm wrong. Thanks for any help. Here's just a few I've found so far (APMEX search):
Nice theme for a collection there. Don't know of any lists, but here are 2 of my favorite horse coins. Here's a pic of the reverse's ,The Mexico Cabalito one peso, and the Italy 2 lire.
I know that Brandon @brg5658 used to have an extensive collection of horse-themed coins and medals, but I don't know if he still has it. Here is my favorite medal. Brandon alerted me to it on eBay. Sorry for the blurry photo, but I lost my better shots on my old computer.

Yeah, brg5658 would be a good one to ask, but that's gonna be one HUGE list, and I doubt anyone has compiled a truly comprehensive one. You'd likely have to narrow it down to one particular time period (say, twentieth century for example- and you'll still have a huge list then). But it's a great theme. I like ships on coins, myself, though I've never really pursued that. Since my daughter Victoria was born in 2001, a century after the end of Queen Victoria's reign, I compiled a list of Victoria-portrait coins that had been issued in 1901, all across the British Empire. The resulting collection would have included some 48-50 types, had I completed it (and I almost did). So my point is, you could go with horses from just one particular year and still probably have a decent sized collection, depending on what year you chose.
I have 1 horse coin from Italy 1916 2 lire. some of the pictures my ex-girlfriend wore a bright green t-shirt reflecting on the coin doooohhhhhh! enjoy...
I'm not aware of a specific list of numismatic equine items, but I was able to search for "horse" at Numista: http://en.numista.com/ and find quite a few things. That would be the closest thing to a list that I know of. The site is a catalog of world coins and, to my understanding, is not a dealer site. If one doesn't already exist, perhaps you could start your own? And a general internet search for "horse coin" returned more things than anyone could ever process. But a few stood out (someone already posted the amazing "Cabalito") - I'm a little partial to the ancients and Asian cash coins, as will become instantaneously obvious:
I like the older silver Irish half crowns and own a couple of them. I gave them to my daughter because she loves horses. She usually wants any coin I have with a horse or lion on it lol.
Here is brg5658's custom set over at NGC. Truly an awesome set (and the awards support this ): https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=5705
Have a look at thessaly in ancient greece. They were the go to horse breeders and some of the coins are lovely.
I know there's a ton. There's a old collector around here who owns a shop and he collects horse coins. One day he pulled out his collection. There were many hundreds of different types. Some real beauts here though. I really like @spirityoda, that one is amazing
ok my memory is working again. lol I have 3 more horse coins. 1918-S Australia gold sovereign KM#29 ... and then 2 from Greece... sorry the focus sucks on these next 2 coins. and
and if you want to include my 3 seahorse coins ??? from Singapore... sorry bad focus... and my NGC proof version...mintage-15,000...
Though I have no pictures of yet I recently bought the Lafayette Dollar coin from the early commemorative sets. The reverse has a horse with Lafayette riding it. A very neat coin.
Yes I still collect horse coins. Up to 270 certified pieces and about 60-70 raw. A "definitive" list is almost impossible to think of, but I have been going for 6 years with little end in sight. Thanks @Stork for posting the link to my set. I need to rephotograph about 1/2 of the collection to get it up to snuff, and some of the descriptions are missing. Always a work in progress. I'm on vacation right now but can post some of my favorite coins when I get back. Best, Brandon
How did I forget the Edward VI Crowns and Half Crowns from 1551 - 1553? They were supposedly the first coins in the UK to feature Arabic rather than Latin numerals. They also feature a rather nice depiction of a fully decked-out horse. These don't come cheap in any condition, even nearly sandblasted.
How about mythological horse? http://www.dc-coin.com/2009ridingliberty20tradedollars999silversatinfinish-3-1-1.aspx
