It's like $95 a year to join. I might give it a go. What do you guys think?
Based on my last PCGS trueview submission, I'm strongly considering reholdering other coins at CACG to replace beat up slabs and get better photos. I don't like how sharp the edges are on the CACG first gen slabs, but I might have to get over that little annoyance. (I like slabs that feel good in the hand)
I tried to sign up with CAC earlier this year but when I saw their application form required me to provide three references, I paused. First, references would be no problem. Second, I bristle when I have to beg a vendor to allow me to spend my money with them. Third, like Woody Allen is reputed to have said: "I don't want to belong to a club that would have me." So, I abandoned it. But, if I was a dealer, or even just a wheeler/dealer, that wanted to buy and sell higher-end material with a marketing cachet then I would probably do it.
I'm pretty sure that Groucho Marx is most often associated with that quip, but a similar sentiment was also expressed much earlier in a John Galsworthy novel as "He naturally despised the Club that did take him." Seems like CAC is adopting the NGC fee membership with grading credits model. Like you, I'm not paying somebody for the privilege of then paying them to grade my coins. I refuse to pay an annual fee for credit cards either. What sort of variety attribution does CAC do? I see that it's a $20 add-on but can't easily find a list.
It's from Annie Hall, and Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) credits it to Groucho Marx, if I recall. But it applies to his situation nicely.
I haven't submitted a coin for grading since the 80's. I don't recall paying to join a club in order to not have to wait to pay for a submission. Correction: I submitted the Matt JFK half and RFK dollar to ICG around 2000. It was a direct submission. Yeah, really, just sent the coins and a check.
Well, the only thing that is consistent is change. In 2000 I was rocking a silver Star Tac flip phone that was cool because the numbers were digital multi color. I wish we could still submit coins like that but they have the submission process down to a science. Likely because there's an enormous number of submissions paying for them AND jumping through the hoops. If it was open to everybody with little cost and effort they'd be flooded with crap and immediately overwhelmed so nothing would get graded. It's bad enough WITH people paying and jumping through the hoops! lol
I don't join much anymore. If I'm selling something, I let the auction service send in the coins for grading. They even help me pick what should go to CAC for a sticker. This has worked really well for me.
