Also new is this token, an undated Jackson Token, “I TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY”. Probably from the early 1820’s or so. It was political in it’s time but it today. E3C1DCA3-9DC1-4C7A-8780-3FBA1008A89A.jpeg 28560423-F113-4175-871F-55D7D3FE88C8.jpeg

That's a Hard Times Token. These HTT's date from 1830's to the 1840's. Just Google the text on the token and you'll get a load of information. Have fun.

I have found that this piece is, perhaps, the most common Hard Times Token. It was issued in the mid 1830s after Jackson vetoed the renewal of the charter for the Bank of the United States.

Jackson didn't like banks and the paper money they issued. His plan was to replace that paper with what collectors call the Classic Head gold pieces. Here is an example.

    1834 $5 Plain 4 All.jpg

The jackass on the reverse, with the "LLD" on its belly, refeers to an honorary degree Harvard awarded to Jackson. Harvard alum, John Quincy Adams, was outraged. He claimed that Jackson was too ignorant to write his own name.

That's the "Readers' Digest" write up on this token.
