As to the law abiding pawn shop scenario.
Sorry if this is perpetuating a stereotype, but basically pawn shops are just in it to make money and are not always the most upstanding citizens.
    1. If they buy it, realize it is "hot" and call the police, they lose their investment.
    2. If they know it is hot, they can refuse the sale.
    3. If they buy it, and know it is hot, they may sell it to the smelter immediately.

Oh I am sure one or two pawn shops are honest, although I've never seen one
in 55 years, in 4 states.

I had a relative who was a heavy drug user. She use to pawn everything in sight, and I would have to go pay to get the family jewelry items back, including one time where I had to threaten litigation on my law firm letterhead. They knew she was a problem because she and her druggie husband once got arrested because they sold the pawn shop $18,000 worth of jewelry that the husband stole from an Indian family staying at a hotel he formerly worked for as the night check in clerk (he claimed the jewelry was abandoned goods he found in the lost and found - bull). It think the pawn shop paid them $1,000.

Anyway, this relative passed away and my wife asked a cop friend to run a check to see if there were any recently pawned items in this relative's name so we could recover them. Turns out she pawned or sold a half set of sterling silverware from her mother, but too long ago for us to recover. I remember the mother complaining that someone stole the silver a year ago, but she didn't report it to the police, probably because she didn't want her daughter arrested. I don't know what a family set of silver is worth, but I bet the pawn shop paid ten cents on the dollar, if that much.

The point is, this pawn shop knew this person was a crook, but took advantage anyway. I have know love for pawn shops, and suspect most are nothing more than fencing operations for thieves.

I hope all property is recovered safely. Do you have the contact information for the detective handling the case in the event that something suspicious presents itself?

I have been informed that one of the stolen coins has already turned up on eBay. I have examined the pictures from the original owner and compared them to the eBay listing. I have no doubt they are the same coin (a medal, actually).

It was being offered by the owner of a coin shop. I believe that owner to be reputable. They have been contacted and the eBay listing was cancelled. There are some questions remaining, however.

I don't have additional details at this point. I do not yet know the status of the other coins. I assume more information will come in time and I will post any such updates here.

    PS:
A list of the stolen items has been supplied to Doug at NCIC.

A few more coins have been located. It appears that the thieves sold stolen items at more than one shop along the Colorado "Front Range". There is video from at least one location. As per local regulations, at one location the seller was required by the shop to present their ID and the information was recorded.

Isn't there a big federal penitentiary in Colorado too? Lets hope he also went up to Wyoming or Nebraska to sell some... No sentence reduction for good time :)
