Stopped by the local convenience store on my way out of town Sunday. The guy who works there during the day knows I collect coins. He reached into his pocked and pulled out a circulated Peace dollar 1922-S and said a guy brought it in the other day and used it and some other change to buy a pack of cigarettes. He asked if I was interested in it so I bought it from him for the silver value.

If only that coin could talk! What an interesting history it must have had. Born in San Francisco in 1922, same year as my wife's uncle. He was born in Sacramento, only 70 miles away.

Constitutional Money bugs aside, "used it to buy" generally means "at face value".

I'm guessing most convenience-store clerks don't really have time, attention, or permission to accept barter for store goods.

True. I'm sure it was accepted at face value $1

It's good to know that you had the decency to give him a fair price for it.

I'm also sure they don't have permission to swap coins out from the drawer for their personal change, either...

Unlike bank tellers, though, I wouldn't think they'd be forbidden from doing so...?

They can buy something out of the drawer with the approval of a manager. I know because I know several tellers that collect occasionally.

Totally agree on your statement. At my branch bank I even have the manager helping me on my collection endeavors.USMC60 PS. When I had my stroke, I had to retire early when I was feeling better and able to get around. I went to the branch bank in my neighborhood which I have been a member of that bank for over 15 years, I should say that particular bank name. Purchase a box of quarters. When I have finished going through the box and went to the bank to return them. I was told by the teller they had a six roll deposit limit. Had her call the manager over and he pulled out the policy and showed me in the bank's policy a maximum of six rolls per transaction. He basically refuse to take the box back as a whole. So I to change my deposit slip and made it out for the six rolls. Needless to say I spent the whole morning making out individual deposit slips for six rolls of coins at a time. After a couple of hours of depositing that box. I went up to the manager and told him I wish to close my account. I'd never seen a manager try to do the back step so fast to try and keep my account. I explained to that manager that he had the choice to accept the box of quarters from a long time member of that bank instead he choose to follow bank policy which cost him my account. Moved to another bank and been happy ever since.:happy:Most of the time I worked out of state. A lot of the time was up in Washington state. So the bank was the same name. It seen the branch bank in the neighborhood that I was living in Washington state, also had the same policy because they were the same bank. But that bank manager realized a long time customer deserve the respect of being a long time customer. And my favorite teller at that bank would actually put rolls of coins aside for me. Since I came into that bank on a weekly basis. Basically all I'll say is some banks know what good customer service really is.

That is all too bad and the way the world is today. In reality, you gave him the choice of keeping you as a customer or possibly loosing his or her job over some rolls of quarters. Although I would have probably did the same exact thing you did. I now check myself and always put myself in the others persons shoes. If it were the 70s and that same banker I seen day in and out, I would be pissed. Today, the manager changes every 6 months and it is all about the board reps... and working your way up...

I don't know maybe I just see things a little different. I bought the box at that neighborhood branch. I personally don't think a individual is going to lose his job over trying to make a long time customer happy. That is just good customer service. And just common sense. Instead their policy cost me my time. And the teller's time for them having to process so many individual deposits. I don't know maybe it's me but someone in the executive board needed to review that part of their policy. At least in my eyes that policy cost them more in their employees time having to do so many single deposits. Than just one. Definitely not cost-efficient. And just downright stupid. Oh well don't have to deal with that garbage anymore. By my box at one branch bank and when I'm finished I take it back to a Another branch bank. That way when I get a new box from my neighborhood branch, I'm sure not to get the box I turned in back. And the other bank I turn my box into. They are more than happy to accept that box and deposited into my account. I really get a kick out of it. The teller that usually gets a box of quarters puts them on her chair and rolls them back to her window. A box of quarters is heavy. It generally takes me less time to do that transaction than other customers doing their transactions. All I know is when I close my account with the other bank. When the manager asked me why I was closing my account. I flat told him maybe the directors who make up the rules. Should periodically review them. Basically I'm closing my account because of poor customer service. And anyone from the executive branch can contact me at any time to discuss the issue. I guess by the managers demeanor and willingness to make what was wrong right came too late. I personally don't think that manager will make that kind of a mistake again. A little common sense cost him and the bank a long time account. This day and age there's or branch bank almost on every corner, it only makes sense to try and keep customers happy. But I'm just a dumb old Marine what do I no.USMC60

For all the comments on banks, get a credit union. Love mine. Have tellers calling me with goodies, setting silver and old bills aside, IHC's etc. I pay them off with candy and treats. As a credit union member you are also the stockholder, big difference.

Been in one ever since I joined the Marines. Unfortunately Navy Federal credit Union does have any branch band banks in South Florida that I know about. Basically it just boils down to just being a nice person with the people you deal with.USMC60
