I bought this coin off ebay a few months back with 2 other indian cents for about 15 dollars. I was surprised with the condition that it was in and I suspect it may be fake. The only indicator to me would be the grade of the coin. I would like to see some opinions on this , thanks!
Hmm - looks XF and real to me. You might also want to check the reverse. I see signs of doubling around the shield, O in one and CENT. Which means you might have a fancy 5 snow 2. I can't see enough to see if it matches what is in my Rick Snow book.
I have a devil of a time reading pictures of copper coins, but where is the wear on this coin? I see enough nicks on the rim, it is probably AU, but that would be my LOW estimate.
Not saying I am right, but the feather tips look a little more worn than AU, the ribbon and hair look separated, but barely(wear across second diamond). The hair below the ribbon looks a little worn also. So based off the pictures I say a solid XF45 - but with the coin in hand I might change that opinion to AU. The shield on the back also looks like it has a rub spot. Remember this my opionion only. A link to http://www.indiancent.com/market/grading.pdf. I like this pdf file.
I was thinking the same thing. I guessed a minimum of 45, as the diamonds are nearly complete, however I suspect it is a AU, but it is hard to tell IMO from a scan on copper coins.
I am not into IHC's, but that looks to me to be a solid AU that was not fully struck. Maybe that is why it is easier to have the coin in hand.
The more I look at the pictures the more I think the brown looks a little flat, this would be one I would definetly have to have in hand. As it is for $15 bucks I take it no matter what - plus he got two other indians.
Thanks guys for your grading on the coin. My guess its between XF and AU. The coin is actually a very light brownish red. I also noticed that it appears to have a very slight doubling on the reverse. would that fetch and premium and is this a fancy 5?
I can only quote what my Rick Snow guide to indian cents say (I recommend getting the book) - and yes I think it is a fancy 5 - plain 5 has a banana shaped top to the 5 and the fancy 5 has a hook. The plain 5 is slightly scarcer. quoting from the Book - "Among the fancy 5 varieties is a very bold reverse doubled die, snow 2. This is very rare and worth a significant premium." I do not know what the premium might be (and that is if) you have a snow-2. There is a real nice example on heritage - follow the link.
The coin looks real and seems to have XF/AU details to me. The color looks a bit too even to be natural, and I suspect it may have been cleaned long ago and since retoned. The flat look could also be a byproduct of the photo/scan technique, so an in-hand assessment would be necessary to confirm. Regardless, it is a nice coin, and for $15, sounds like you got a good deal...Mike
