    Look at the photo just below the midpoint of the mechanism is something sticking out like a thorn. On a mint state coin it's clear it's a date punch 1.

    Thank you. I see it now. I was looking at the "1".
    Compared to other photos of 1897's, I see the piece sticking out of the neck on the OP's coin.
