These two coins were sold to me as 'Wire Money of Peter the Great', but, even though coin #2 only weighs 0.23gm which IS consistent with Czar peter's coins, coin #1 weighs 0.66gm, which (may) indicate an 'earlier' coin. Also, I cannot find a reference to 'Peter' in the legend on either coin - in fact, I cannot find any of the legend that I would normally associate with Czar Peter, namely:- So, what do I have? Coin #1 Coin #2
TC, i'm not sure, but the last time i had to ID some of these, i used this place... http://www.metaldetectingworld.com/photogalary/wire_ money/index_5.htm be sure to go through the numberd pages at the bottom (1-6).
Thanks, Chris. A handy reference to have (I have noted it.) While I couldn't recognise either of my coins there, I was able to determine that the fourth line on the legend of the second coin is 'BCEAPOY' which appears on some coins of Tsar Ivan IV Vasiljevich (Ivan The Terrible), Pskov Mint, c.1560 (however, it also appears on coins of Czar Peter.) The first coin, I am feeling may be Boris Godunov, 1598-1605, Pskov Mint, similar to Sp 81:8 Does anyone have anything that they could add that might help, please?
i wasn't even aware of that guy (Boris), but I found one online and the reverse seems to match up. i don't know on attribution TC. not many (if any) wire money experts around here. @dougsmit may know?
