I've been watching again for more MA Legionary Denarii to add to my collection and I've found two recently within my budget. That only leaves 17 more for a complete set. ONLY! My two newest are nothing to write home about, but they do fill the slots. Legs II, V, VI, IX, XI, XIII, XVI, XIX, XX, XXII Post your Legionary Denarii (and, BTW, if you want to get rid of one or more, let me know)
Pretty slick, Big Bro (congrats on scoring a couple more sweeties in your mini-collection) Sadly, I don't have one of these amazing examples "yet" ... Cheers, my friend
I like that legion XX11, good detail of the galley, that's what I generally look for. Question with your experience what is the scarcest legion to find?
I'm not sure, but I believe Chortis Specvlatorvm and Chortivm Praetoriarvm have to be two of the tougher ones to find. I'm sure some of the ones I'm missing may be just as hard.
I generally am not impressed with the galley side. I want the legion identification to at least be readable.
Here is another tough one. Only 5 in the Delos hoard. Fewer than the Chortis Specvlatorvm (9) and Chortivm Praetoriarvm(6) varieties.
Nice additions, Bing. I'm not trying for a full series, but there are a few more legionary denarii that I'd like to add to my own collection.
There is a good discussion on the series and comparative scarcity of the various legions here: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=70907.0
Thanks @Ajax. A long way to go. I started with Legio XI back in 1981. Every now and then I find one or two to add to the series.
My only Legionary so far, a LEG XV with a very faint "V" due to a worn die. I've been watching for others but because of the steep increase in price that comes with better examples, I have had a hard time finding more that I both like enough to buy and can afford:
