Here is a 1953 Eisenhower offcial inaugural medal in silver. The 1952 presidential election marked the first time the Republicans had won the presidency since 1928. As you might expect, they were in a mood to celebrate.

This medal marked the first time that silver inaugural medals had been offered to the public. In the past they had no been made at all, or they were made in limited quanties and given to people who had held special positions on the inaugural committee.

There are two types of these pieces. About 25 pieces were made with numbers on the edge for specialist collectors. There were 788 pieces sold to the public.

Given the mintage, these pieces are worth a few hundred dollars.

Gold medals are made, but in very limited quanties. Usually they are limited to one for the president, one for the vice presidtent and sometimes one for the chairman of the inaugural committee. The presidental and vice presidential pieces are almost always held in museums.

My largest single piece of silver. Kilo coin issued by Spain. It's quite impressive in hand. Mostly purchased it because of the Wildman thaler depicted on the reverse.
