    Called a countermark or counterpunch. Seach for those, you'll find a ton of info.

    Why? Sometimes it's as simple as "Because little boys have access to metal punches and hammers"....

    I found a Buffalo nickel in a roll search a few years ago that had the Ford logo stamped on it, apparently someone in their tool and die department was having a bit of fun that day.
