Anyone collect Pre-1933 gold...a Type Set collection to start ;)

    Hello everyone.

I'm thinking of starting a Pre-1933 US gold Type Collection. I have a "feeling" this is a good time to buy historic Pre-1933 gold at minimum (almost give-away) premiums. Price comparisons at my PNG local shop indicate Pre- gold ALMOST (slight weight differences be damned) on par with contemporary bullion. Gold + historic numismatic value a possible future winner (maybe).

Looking for tips "raw" vs graded slabs. Any fav sources?
I have the Red Book Guide of Type US Coins + LOTS of misc contemporary gold and silver (including 1/2 oz complete set of gold Pandas...this suddenly landed in my lap from my local PNG shop). Stacking back in 2010 got so BORING so I started trying accumulating gold and silver with a purpose or goal.

    Thanks for any input.

I'm seeing premiums come down a bit as well. The recent auction prices that you can pull up on the PCGS website is pretty good as far as seeing the trend.
As for me, I re-started my pre-33 Double Eagle Type 1 collecting, just a few months ago.

I prefer pre-1933 gold coins. I did complete a set of $2.50 Gold Indians as it’s an affordable set except for one coin. I saved and bought that one too as it’s needed for the set.

Yes you do and it’s a very nice set. When I put my set together years ago I went with the 1911 Strong D. If I could find a Weak D as nice as yours I’d buy it. I’m not a variety collector but this is one variety that I would like to have.

Well to honest, after my heart attack in March of 2020, I gave it to my son. I didn't expect to still be here.

I'm surprised that you are seeing miniscule premiums for lots of pre-1933 gold.

With gold itself hitting $2,600 I would have though there'd be the usual "get ahead" pricing on Double Eagles and others coins, filtering down.

I need two double eagles to complete my gold type set. A Liberty Head with Motto Twenty D. reverse and a Saint-Gaudens with Motto. My type set starts with the Classic Head coins as the Capped and Draped Bust coins are way beyond my budget as is a $4 Stella and the Roman Numeral Double Eagles. Given the price of gold I might be waiting a while before the set is complete.

It will be a while, but you'll be the first to know. I do have a small group of raw Classic Head gold that I should think about getting slabbed and selling a few of those for the two double eagles I'm missing. That's a project in the "someday file."

Here's a link to my gold type set which is on the NGC registry. I've been collecting gold type coins since I was in high school in the 1960s. One of the coins in this set is a piece I bought when I was in high school.

    https://www.ngccoin.com/registry/competitive-sets/5345/

I am concerned about the current high price of gold and whether or not it will hold that these levels. I've seen gold when it was $850 an ounce and then fell eventually to under $300. I don't think we will see those days again, but it's got a long way to fall if it goes in that direction.

About the only coins that are selling for close to melt are the common date $20 gold coins, especially the St. Gaudens coins. The rest sell for well over melt.

Historically, that has not been the case. This is especially true when coin collectors "sense" that gold is headed for a correction. I've seen circulated "old gold" sell for less than melt during those brief periods.

If you are going to buy any significant pre 1933 U.S. gold, I would strongly recommend that you buy certified coins which have been reviewed by legitimate companies. Counterfeits have been made for as long as there have been coins. There were deceptive counterfeits around when I was collecting in the 1960s. This especially true, but not limited to, the Three Dollar Gold Piece.
