By the look of the rest of your Cent it's obvious that it is just PMD - Post mint damage. Starting 1944 they were using old copper shell casing material from the war. Copper is soft so any hit it receives during circulation can give it that appearance.
Its obviously in rough shape, but I can't see handling it moving the letters around? Interesting. I don't know anything about coins really but I'll bet if they could talk this one has some stories! Lol. Thank you for the info, I didn't realize they were so pliable
