Can't venture a guess. What's with the 'noise' all over the coin? Still, I'd probably have grabbed it, given the chance.
Im gonna venture and say the darker spots are just from luster and the coin is actually red. The noise on the coin appears to be fine streaks from improper alloy mix, with some nice sand blasted die surfaces which would account for the light bouncing all over the place. Id say it is atleast 66 Rd. I love these early strike high grade lincolns.
Nah I think it's red. Because of that sandy surface, it is reflecting light all over the place and depending on the light angle you are gonna get spots that wont reflect any light at all. I bet if @jtlee321 did one of his gifs on this coin, it would make those dark spots move and show red all around the coin.
OK, I have my heart rate back under control. Partly a bit of "woodie" planchet irregularity, partly the brutality of very high-resolution coin imaging. It's reached the point where we're resolving too many pixels to easily achieve the "in-hand" look, and the rules for evaluating this type of imaging need to adjust upwards. MS66RB.
You guys are right about the surface. It's luster is gorgeous and the surfaces have that orange peel look to them. All the dark spots you see are where the light is reflecting away. The obverse has a very cool, very light woodie effect going. I might have to do an animated gif for this one. I did pay more than for this one than I would ever have paid for a raw example off eBay. This one came from a B&M that I haven't been to in several months.
