I have been looking for an interesting coin of Trajan and this one popped up on FAC. It was interesting so I bought it. Here are the notes on the coin: RPC online III 2987 notes, "[Sydenham] 165 describes the obv. as laureate and draped, quoting Ratto, 8 Feb. 1928, lot 2657, but the coin is not illustrated and no specimen has surfaced since. Another ‘ghost’ ?" Our coin is clearly draped on the far shoulder and clearly not a ghost. RPC online lists 15 specimens none with drapery. We are not sure if the Ratto coin is this type or has drapery on both shoulders. Here is the attribution: Silver didrachm, Ratto (1928) 2657; Sydenham 165 (refs. Ratto); Metcalf Conspectus 54b (same); RPC online 2987 (same); BMC Galatia p. 52, 49 var. (no drapery), VF/F, fine style high-relief bust, toned, well centered and struck, slight porosity, some marks, 6.259g, 21.6mm, 180o, Cappadocia, Caesarea mint, 98 - 99 A.D.; obverse AYT KAIC NEP TPAIANOC CEBACT GEPM, laureate bust right, slight drapery on far shoulder; reverse DHM EXUPAT B (tribunus plebis, consul secundum), Eleutheria (Liberty) standing left, wearing chiton and peplos, pileus liberatis (freedom cap) in right hand, rod in left hand And here is the coin: Please post your coins of Trajan.
Awesome coin! I put in a bid on one of these types about a month back didnt win though No trajans for me to share I should probably work on that
Very nice bust on that one... I think it has lots of character. I'm generally speaking not a fan of Trajan's portraits.
Congrats on your new OP-score!! Sadly, I still only have these three Trajan-examples ... => so many other rulers, so little coin-cash, eh?
A interesting coin with an unusual portrait of Trajan! Seems quite scarce as well? Provincials is one area of numismatics I have never gotten into. I am sure it will come.
I have a few Trajan's but this is one of my favorites a huge chunky bronze sestertius of his famous column. 25gm, RIC 600.
Definitely a cool portrait style!!! How about a Hexachalkon (19mm, 6 grams) of Trajan with the Tyche reverse??? These were apparently minted in Rome for circulation in Syria.
