Dear Forum Members, Please help me identify this Byzantine coin. The seller indicated that it is from I. Andronikos, but did not give me a reference on which type of his coins could it be. However, I found similar coins (depicting the emperor and Mary) from I. Manuel and Isaac II. Angelos, as well. Unfortunately, the letters are not visible on this coin. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!
In the meantime, I solved my question with a lot of research This is it: https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/byz/michael_VIII/sb2265.jpg Michael VIII Paleologus 1261-1282 AD, AE Trachy, Constantinople mint. Obverse: O AΓI-ΔEMETΡ, St. Demetrius standing facing, holding spear and resting left hand on shield, star at lower left Reverse: MP-ΘV, MIXHAΛ, Michael standing on left, holding labarum, being crowned by Mary on right. Reference: Sear 2265.
This coin certainly doesn’t look like one from the time of Andronikos Komnenos, but it looks like a coin from post 1204, that is after the Sack of Constantinople 1204. After 1204 Byzantine coinage had a distinct style similar like yours. So, it is safe to say it is NOT from Andronikos Komnenos.
