I doubt it would be a medal, it seems too circulated. Is there any way to get a better picture of the piece?
Are you sure it is 1639 ? From the quality of the edges it looks much more likely to be late 17th or 18th century. And definetly not a medal. I guess 20ct gold.
It is clearly marked 1639. The condition is poor, but I will work to get some better pictures in hope of identification. Thank you
The quality of the coin is creating a real challenge in showing better pictures. Here is the back side:
"Terret dum torret" is probably a Latin saying. I am not certain of the meaning, but I think it is "Fear until Burned" or something like that (possible reference to fireships?). The devices look like galleons or old warships to me. The naval theme, 1639 date and inscription cause me to wonder if the medal is of Dutch origin, commemorating the Battle of the Downs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Downs
