I've heard from a dealer friend that someone has completed this study but he didn't know specifically who, and I haven't been able to track it down in any of the large reference guides I have to the coinage of Alexander the Great. I'll keep searching - I unfortunately have insufficient time to try to replicate this analysis myself, nor access to enough older catalogs, although that would indeed be quite enjoyable.

This is a beautiful image of a beautiful coin - thank you for sharing it. I am particularly interested in the coin's portrait of Alexander as Apollo. I am writing a children's book titled "The Usborne Art Book about Portraits", for Usborne Publishing in London. I would love to feature this coin in the book, if you can grant me permission to use your image? My email address is: rosied@usborne.co.uk if you would like to get in touch! Thanks.

Welcome @Usborne editor. Speaking for myself, I would love to have a copy of this book for my grandson when it is finished. Maybe it will get him interested in coins or art. I think he needs some help:

From my understanding, this is supposed to be a school bus with a giant bug on top. Maybe I should not be letting him watch the Magic School Bus anymore, but it was such a great show (any of you 80's or 90's kids remember that show on PBS?)

Greatest congratulations to you, AncientJoe! Superb, key-position coin. I have had in my hands two examples of this "Alexanders the Great featured portrait" coins. One was the same with tripod from Colophon, and another one was with the bee at reverce, I am not shure if it's Magnesia or something else. If we'll seeing only at images of this two coins, we can say that they are the same or almost the same. They are very close. But you can believe me, if you'll have both in hands, you'll see they are not the same obverce die. Colophon portrait have a big size, another one smallest. I think there was one source or etalon - sculpture, or image and etc., and two great talent celators in far distance mints have made very close copies of one etalon. IMHO.
Here is my modest Phillip II stater.
