Here was an interesting coin that doesn't come on the market very often. I thought the coin actually had pretty nice eye appeal, despite being plugged and having graffiti. It brought $25,000, which is a hefty sum for a problem coin.

So just curious, do you guys think that this is too much, just the right amount, or too little money for this coin?

Greysheet lists a Good at $24,000 and a VF at $48,000, but the few dealers that have one on the market have been asking significantly more money.

I can see the plug (just), but what are they calling "graffiti"? Are those 2 scratches graffiti?

I would say it is a decent deal. Then again I find it hard to believe that a person who could afford 25k would not wait for a problem free coin for 40-50k. Then again I wonder how often these come up for sale. I guess I really do not know enough about this coin but 25k seems to be a good deal.

I believe there are only 23 known examples of the 1823 bust quarter. They very rarely come on the market, although I believe 2 currently are (dick osbourne had one the last time I looked in his inventory, and Rich Uhrich currently has one for sale.

I've only see 3 of the examples and none of them have been problem free or close to it.

In my opinion it's hard to say whether or not the coin was a good deal, as there simply aren't too many recent auction results for them, and greysheet values and redbook values on these coins are a good bit too low. I would be inclined to think that it was an alright deal, simply based on the rarity of the coin, and the fact that it is a good bit cheaper than any of the ones currently on the market.

This is an extremely rare coin in ANY condition. Given that, I see no problem with the price paid. Try and find another example...Mike

If you look on the reverse of the coin, there is a barely visible cursive L engraved.

Even with the graffiti, it's still very nice looking.
