I was surprised that I scored all three targets (actually, I had 6, but only bid on 3) from the Agora 62 Auction today. Wonder fill-ins, and I even extended my Roman Ruler Portraits with a new Empress... Straight from the Auction Listing: Paulina (wife of Maximinus I). Died before A.D. 235. AE sestertius (30.77 mm, 19.66 g, 11 h). 2nd emission of Maximinus I, A.D. 236. DIVA PAVLINA, veiled and draped bust right / CONSECRATIO / S - C, Paulina, raising hand and holding scepter, reclining left on peacock flying upward to right. RIC IV 3; Banti 1. aVF/F, obverse flan defect or damage. Very Rare. POST YOUR AGORA AUCTION WINS, OR POST ANY SIMILAR COINS!
Always wanted a CAMEL! Now I can kick back, light it up, and smoke a Camel! (Naw... non-smoker here!) Arabia Petraea, Bostra. Trajan. A.D. 98-117. AR drachm (18.57 mm, 2.92 g, 8 h). Struck A.D. 114-116. AYTOKP KAIC NEP TPAIANω APICTω CЄB ΓЄPM ΔAK, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / ΔHMAPX EΞ UPAT ς, Arabia standing left holding branch and bundle of cinnamon sticks; at feet, camel left. SNG ANS 1158; SNG von Aulock 6408; Sydenham, Caesarea 205. VF. Ex Harlan J. Berk.
I was fascinated by this one. Being a siglos down to Darius III, this was probably the MONEY that Darius III used to finance his war against Alexander III (The Great) of Makedon before the destruction of the Persian Empire... Achaemenid Kingdom. Artaxerxes II to Darios III. Ca. 375-336 B.C. AR siglos (15.22 mm, 5.45 g). Persian king or hero in kneeling-running stance right, holding daggar and bow / Rectangular incuse punch. Carradice Type IV (late); BMC 172ff; SNG Kayhan 1031. aVF.
Sorry, didn't mean for that to sound sulky. I'm loving the coins you got Alegandron! (Particularly that single!)
LOL, yeah, I agree... Alfredo has been good getting them to me in the past! Sooo...yeah, I am tempting Fate.
Yeah, a little frustrating. But, ended ok for me. I looked to target 6, but it was going to move me into some big money when I was only looking to win one item... Got three... Saw Paulina, and bid. Then I needed a cool Camel, bid, then, being an Alex III fan, needed to have that Siglos that financed the Persian War Effort against the Invading Makedons... I STOPPED on the other 3...
WOW !!! Brian, I think those three are terrific!!! Congrats @Alegandron !!! I would've loved a 'camel' and a siglos and even Paulina since I'm still missing examples of those.... Hmm, If I had a remaining budget I might've gone after them too....Do you bid as Alegandron?
I won this coin in auction 62 Bela IV AR Denar However, I totally forgot to bid on a sweet Umayyad Caliphate dirham dated to 710 that I also wanted and I'm totally kicking myself for that. I thought I had bid on it, but apparently not.
Congrats! One of those camel Drachms is on the perpetual want list. That chubby Persian nugget is kind of cool with what looks like a pupil painted on the eye of the king .
I had never thought of collecting one of these as a 'foe of Alexander III' but yours does seem to be the right style for that duty. "Carradice Type IV" means the king is running with a daggar. The "(late)" is due to the king's clothes being made of straight lines up and down, I assume, which is a version I do not have. Earlier ones have more varied direction wrappings as below. I was a bit surprised in the quote of "SNG Kayhan 1031" since that reference is a great resource for minor silver of Turkey and not where you go for sigloi. I looked and Kayhan had ten of the worst type IV coins I have ever seen. The other types were represented by a total of four coins which were unremarkable. If anyone here owns SNG Kayhan, look 1031-1040 up and see what I mean. Thanks for pointing out I need to go shopping for a Type IV with that style clothes. I needed something else on my want list....right?
LOL, in the past, you inspired me to look more at Achaemenid Sigloi... I already had Type III and IV, and some cool fractional Sigloi. But I realized Darius HAD to spend major monies for the War, AND he had a big chunk of his Treasury, as well as his Wife, Mother, and Daughters captured at the Battle of Issus... so, who knows... mine may even be part of Alex's War Booty!
I love that coin. I've had one of those on my want list for a while now. Only problem is that my want list is so thick it could choke a horse. So it will be a while before I get to one.
That siglos has everything working for it. My favorite of the bunch (though that camel is now on my want list).
