Well, I finally checked out this site about cool serial numbers. First I punched in a note that my wife got in change the complete serial number is F09191090D. Came back as a 97.0% rating. Been digging through some star notes that I've accumulated over the years so next is a 1999 H01221224*. Now this one comes back as 96.2%. Being a star note I would like to think it a bit cooler on the index but that's not an option. Finally I'm punching in a 1999 star note with the serial number C11111301*. This one rates a 99.0% and being a star note should be higher. Basically what I just did was a test with notes that I have on hand. Cool numbers is interesting but not really that applicable to currency collecting. The first note I will spend in a heartbeat. It's really not that special. The others I kept becaue they are star notes in good shape. The only one that I would have kept sheerly for the serial number is the C11111301*. Reason being that six of the same digit is unusual. Serious collectors would go for that note. 5 in a row and 6 total 1s are the key. Like I said it's a cool site but unless I play a lot of liars poker it's not much more to me. Still, I'll consult it from time to time for the heck of it.
Nice star notes Clembo I agree with your assessment - neat place to see the rarity of a combination not nessiceraly a note. Best Regards Darryl
its not a very good method, but it works fine for me. i can tell if its rare if the number box is colored at this website. if its white, i usually spend it.:kewl:
Actually Coinlover that's not really a bad system - especially for quick reference. Still, nothing beats a good book IMHO but I don't see a lot of people here rushing out to buy them. I originally saved the ones that I posted here for condition. Knew they weren't "rare" but in XF-AU. Was going through a lot of my star notes the other day and picked those for the "cool number" experiment.
I picked up a free copy of Paper Money Values at the Summer FUN show, it has values for all the star notes. All of mine were worth face except for a $2 * note worth $12.
bad thing about books is they get outdated every year. with the internet you just look them up. i am curious to see how much mine are worth though!:kewl:
A good book will give you much more insight than than the internet. PLEASE don't EVER forget that. I'm not just talking about coins and currency either. I spend TOO much time on the internet as it is. When I have the real time I read a good book. Outdated or not they are worth the money. clembo
