It arrived, my Pan-Pac, and it's a real beauty: Here she is in the holder in all it's full glory... What a pretty little coin. I absolutely love this one.
I'm going for 50, but this year I'm stopping after about 12 or 13 (I have 11 now) as I am also pursuing 19th century Mexican silver coinage and I want to get a few more examples of that before the year is out. Next year I hope to resume with #13 or #14 (depending how I end up this year) and try to get another 8-10. This is probably going to be a 5 year long project for me. I could complete it sooner than that but I'm not in any particular hurry. Like I said, there's other coin collecting areas I also want to pay attention to.
That's a super nice Pan Pac half dollar you got! I bought one many years ago, had it graded and learned a lot from that lesson!
I really like the design, by both Morgan and Barber. Only about 60k struck with around half unsold and melted down. Some of them have fantastic toning. Mine isn't one of those but I still think it's pretty
I hear that. I'm also working on the 50 coin set - PCGS set registry - but I don't have the Pan Pac half yet. This has been an exceptionally fun set to slowly piece together.
Here's mine, which is a PCGS MS-64. I've had this one for many years. More than a few Pan-Pac half dollars were messed up by the packaging in which they came. A neat Pan-Pac item is the three piece set with the half dollar, gold dollar and quarter eagle. It came in a leather covered box with a plush interior. Unfortunately the interior was not inert. The gold made out okay, but the chemicals in the box went after the half dollar, leaving it with ugly toning. I once saw a certified set. The gold was graded Choice to gem Mint State (the gold dollar was NGC graded MS-66), but the half dollar was "details" graded because it had been polished to remove the toning. Heritage still wanted $10,000 for it.
