Post your coins from Mexico

Says I have been watching this thread for a few years, It has never popped into my feed. A couple that I have picked up recently.

Since I am only about 20 miles north of Mexico and belong to a coin club, I used to be able to get gold coins a few times, but silver was very common, a silver ONZA was then about $10 each, but both gold and silver coins now are hard to move in quantity according to several collectors on the Mexico side. I can usually obtain silver, but almost never gold. Jim

 

Yes, in the "old days" Mexican cap and rays 8 reales, circulated, could be bought in bulk. I remember going through coffee cans full of these coins. They were average circulated mostly common dates/mints, probably averaging around fine condition, but it was fun going through the cans looking for scarcer coins in decent condition. That was back around 1980.

I used to attend the coin show in Mexico City and once in Guadalajara, from 1985 to 1990. The show was operated through the Numismatic Society of Mexico A.C. Tours were made to the Mexico City Mint, the oldest mint in North America. Another tour was to the numismatic exhibit at the Banco de Mexico. There were even barbeques at the Pedro Domecq distillery near Mexico City, with unlimited drinks. The Guadalajara show included a trip to the Museo Clemente Orozco and visits to one of the largest mercados in Mexico.

The shows themselves were quite small, with around 20 dealers or so, but there were also some very nice coins available.

At the Guadalajara show I was able to pick up this hand over book 8 escudos at the auction held one evening, after the closing of the show. As these coins go, this is a more common date. There is a small flan flaw in the obverse field.

I haven't purchased any Mexican coins out of Mexico in decades. The Mexico City show is still being held annually, but I heard that attendance has dropped significantly over the years.

 

I would like to buy one, but unfortunately they sell for way more than I am willing to pay.

In any case, his coins are the only Mexican ones that are of interest to me.

Got it because of the date, 100 yrs before I was born.

And the Carlos III BELOW, XF-45 in an old green holder, is in the mail for me right now.

 

I got this "set" as a giveaway at my high school coin club around 50 years ago. They sat in a box for decades but I pulled them out for the "sentimental coins" thread. Not sure if I ever really looked at them. Not worth anything but I really like the 20 centavos design and how big it is (28.5mm). Figured I'd revive this thread instead of posting separately.

 

This is my favorite coin from the "restored" republic period of 1867 to 1876, before the rise of Porfirio Díaz to the presidency, where he assumed dictatorial powers.
