198? Quarter Damage

    Not sure how this damage happened. Does anyone have any idea what could have possibly caused this?     Perhaps an acid bath.

    Yeah, that's a real strong acid, that one was smoking when they pulled it out. When you see the bumpy surfaces like that, that's acid.

    Well I have decided I am going to retire the coin. Its obviously had a rough life in circulation. ;)

    Hi, good images! it seems an effervescent tablet partially dissolved:woot: Similarly, if an acid attack the coin is an alloy of nickel and copper where the nickel is more reactive, maybe this explains the excessive porosity. Now...if there was a partial melting of alloy so the copper is the first to melt and remains an excess of nickel. It is only a opinion.
