This monstrous bronze arrived today. It's now the largest bronze in my collection. ROME. The Republic. 225-217 BC. AE Aes Grave As (256.29 grams; 64 mm). Obv: Head of Janus; -- (mark of value) below. Rev: Prow right; I (mark of value) above. Crawford 35/1; Vecchi ICC 74. ex Hannelore Scheiner Collection; acquired in 1966 from Martin Nading of Fort Wayne, IN. Untouched patina.
Yes, it was one of those coins I just had to have. It's my only Republican coin, in fact. I prefer the earlier dating, in which it was made to commemorate Rome's defeat of Carthage at sea by means of the corvus. I'm sure you've read Andrew's summary of the argument.
Wow, great coin, good features on Janus head and nice patina. Mine is about the same size. Roman Republican. Libral standard. Janus/Prow As, 225-217 B.C. Obv.: Head of Janus. Rev.: Prow right. Crawford 35/1. TV 51. AE (bronze); 258 gr; 63mm; gVF I also have a junior sized one. Roman Republican. Post Semi Libral standard. Janus/Prow As, 215-212 B.C. Obv.: Head of Janus. Rev.: Prow right. Crawford 41/5a. TV . AE (bronze); 71 gr; 39mm
@rrdenarius it's a bit tough to tell from your photo, but is your libral As the scarcer variety that has no value mark beneath the neck?
That is an AWESOME aes grave! Congrats!!!! Held one of these in my hand at the NYINC show. These large Aes Grave are impressive in hand.
Just found my aes grave sexton pics. Not quite as as heavy as yours Carausius but thought I share anyway
Any chance you could show us both sides of that sweet OP-score? ... I'm totally jealous of that awesome hunk of love!! (congrats, C)
AH! VERY VERY NICE! The Semis and As are the two I will be capturing someday. Well done! Every time I see one from a friend of mine at a show, I always pick it up, feel the heft, and gradually open my wallet a little more. Then I buy several other coins from him... and look at the As for another day's capture... My largest is only a Triens (1/3 As), but it is still amazing the heft the Aes Grave series have!
