Does anyone out there think the U.S. Treasury department might issue emergency notes for this IRAQ debacle ( when they do pull out )? Like they did for North Africa and Hawaii. Do They Circulate U.S. Currency Over There?
A good question but I doubt it. Hasn't happened since World War II so why would they start it again now? As for circulating U.S. currency I would NOT doubt that. I used to sell a decent amount of currency on ebay. Never wanted to sell "overseas" but had a few people ask me about it. Always told them if they could pay in U.S. currency at their own risk I'd be willing to do it. You would be surprised at what's out there. I sold to people from Canada (which isn't too surprising) as well as France, Japan, South Korea and Thailand. I sold A LOT of singles to the guy in Thailand and he always sent U.S. cash. Much of it ended up in MY collection. His payments would include consectutive, CU singles from the 1960s. Oh yeah, it's out there. clembo
the US issued stamped US notes in Hawaii and North Africa for the fear we would lose that land and didnt want the currecny to get captured and used against us. with the counterstamped notes, they could emidiately be deemed illegal or obsolete with no cash value. With Iraw, there is no need. The new provisional Iraqi govt issues its own notes, and american notes are widley accpeted there with no fear of losing and having the money confiscated by enemy hands... so no, i do not think anything liek thatwould happen in Iraq.
I had a few of these sent to me as well as old saddam coins medals and new money...are they still in use? if so...get a designer over there STAT and get to work on a design for that coinage
north africa notes were specially issued for u.s. troops serving in north africa. hawaiian notes were issued for use within hawaii, in case hawaii was taken over by the japanese. out here in iraq, we use normal u.s. currency, (along with credit cards and e-cash cards). the only thing specially made for us are plastic "pog coins" that are only usable in aafes bx/px/concessionaire stores. besides those, (which made their debut in 2003), i believe the last time a special currency was used for troops in combat was with MPC in vietnam.
its a good thing those pogs are redeemable at any aafes in the world, because they are a gift certificate.
