    @Alegandron, wonder no more...

    You were only twelve or thirteen years old when that "modern (?)" scale of rating the authenticity of ancients was used by the half-dozen ancient consultants (all established major :bookworm::cigar: ancient dealers while you were still a teenager) as a way of communicating an opinion on the authenticity of an ancient coin. I have been told that these consultants were selected (over many other well regarded experts WHO DID NOT MAKE THE CUT :jawdrop:) when their opinions matched over 98% with other prominent European experts and the actual coins in major collections. The instructor calls it "authenticating-the-authenticators" :D

    At that time, the grades of the coins did not matter - only authentication. So the scale I posted has nothing to do with grading. For that, you'll need to argue with the TPGS.

    Obviously, I greatly appreciate the fact that members have alerted me to a fake coin(s) that I have posted since I joined CT back in January of 2015---counting the Nero denarius that Barry posted about there were also two others and all have been returned.... obviously I don't want any coin that is a modern forgery.

    Raising doubts about authenticity, inadvertently or not, is devastating to any collector so......

    Perhaps the simplest way to approach this is only to respond if the poster asks for opinions of genuineness otherwise a PM should be sent to address any concerns privately and state the reasons why???

    This is the ancient forum and I'll abide with whatever the guys say; however I disagree :troll: for the following reasons:

    1. Although disappointed to find out a coin I have is a counterfeit; I should be pleased to find out. Then, I can possibly return it for a refund or share the fact so every one on the thread can learn the reasons it is a fake.

    2. If we go the PM route, that will possibly be the end of it. Will the person have his coin authenticated? Will the person be too ashamed to let us know the coin is bad if it turns out to be? Based on what I have seen since joining CT, if any member (except for a few) questioned the authenticity of a coin I had posted in a PM; I should thank them very much and then...:muted: :angelic: That's exactly how the member should regard my :bucktooth: post about his coin.

    3. So again, I'll just ask questions from now on.
