I guess im still learning how to distinguish a double die from machine doubling. At first i figured just MD at the end of Liberty, but the bit near the earlobe making me think twice idk. Couldnt find a match on coppercoins. Appreciate any input.
This is flat and shelf-like, hence Machine doubling. You can also find the DDO/DDR variety coins at varietyvista.com. This is the DDO.
@Roosters …the term is “doubled die”. The design on the die is doubled when it is created, then used to strike coins that exhibit the doubling. This classic doubling of dies occurred during the period of “multiple-squeeze” die creation. In 1985 the Mint began using a “single-squeeze” method and by the mid ‘90s all denominations not proof had transitioned to this new method. It was minted by a worn die. It’s slightly off center but not enough to bring a premium. I’d put it in a flip as it’s a nice looking coin. Welcome to CT.
Die deterioration damage, so little extra value even for proof 65 , maybe a dollar or two. Many held large numbers of them when issued as many collectors thought they might find the very desirable DDO. Do keep it and use it for comparison for other 69S you might find. Jim
