Mom immigrated with her family from Holland at age 12 in 1924. This coin was her high school graduation present in the year of issue. Technically circulated, I do not believe it was ever carried; in my youth it was kept in a just-large-enough rouge cup, in her dresser. There can't be much evidence of circulation; it probably would grade as high MS, imho. I've decided to get it professionally graded, an would like your opinions an' suggestions about how to select a grading service, an' what cautions I should take in that endeavor. I've been told that the fakes of this coin are very good (Italian?). Should I be concerned about it being switched by someone at the grading service? What precautions might I take to limit my exposure to that kind of fraud? Additionally, were the fakes of this type, during the last year of issue, common...that is, could this be one of them? I'm not at all knowledgeable enough to determine that prior to offering it for grading. As my questions indicate, I'm kinda dumb, an' scared about this undertaking. Thanks for lookin'!
Now THIS is THE reason to have a coin encapsulated. I believe that protecting a cherished family heirloom absolutely merits encapsulation.. ICG will even make you an insert showing its family heritage. They excel at that sort of thing and their service is exceedingly inexpensive. Submitting is super easy too... Go to ICGCOIN.com and those folks will fix you right up.
Good counsel, Randy...Thank you! I'm liking to hear about their service being inexpensive.; I'll save a nickel when I can...Thank you!
I think the courtesy of a discount might be extended to you, since you are a member here. I am certain the gentleman that is a member here and a respected TPG Grader @ ICG.....and very knowledgeable...will read your Post and will instruct you how to request, if available for a gold piece.
That's high MS if there ever was it. These were a little, I'll call them, "mushy," but don't let that throw you off. My Mom had Russian silver for us from my Grandmom. None of it like in this grade, though. Personally, I'd keep it free, like that, I wouldn't grade it. ICG, if you do grade it. Best customer service.
I just went back and saw this question. Absolutely not. Could you imagine Ford Motor Company putting worn out engines in new cars? Of course not. They would be out of business in no time…. The grading companies are very much the same. I have sent thousand dollar coins in without any concern whatsoever. That need not be a concern when you submit.
I'm convinced...went to their site, read all their stuff, an' am sure of getting money's worth there. Thank you!
I don't anticipate selling it...but I'll be 84 in November. Tho' in good health so far, one can't live forever, an' the kids I have are not of my seed. They're good folks for sure...but within 10-15 years someone will sell it, an' meanwhile it will be as well protected as possible. I understand your view about this...that's why I still have it 'free'. But prudence dictates planning for that eventuality, Thanks...
Thanks, Randy...I'm just a worry-wart, an' a control freak. You are absolutely correct, of course...foolish of me, in retrospect.
It's been a while Whit. Good to see ya. Love the coin, looks like it deserves a 58, We haven't heard from @Insider lately.
