Even though this is an old thread I have recently purchased a Caligula:

    Gaius Caligula, AD 37-41
    Æ As, 29mm, 11.5g, 6h; Rome mint, AD 37-8
Obv.: C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT, bare head left.
Rev.: VESTA above, S C across field, Vesta, veiled and draped, seated left on ornamental throne, holding patera and long transverse scepter.

I've had this one for a long time and it once had a patina like the one quoted. I removed it when I first got into ancients and was green:meh:. Fortunately the surface turned out ok.

Love the patina, details and overall eye-appeal...and that reverse is fantastic!!

EDIT: I just realized I missed this thread when it was created.....

    Super posts everyone!!!

    Absolutely beautiful bronze, SwK.
As you say, it is in almost un-improvable condition with superb Tiber patina.
    A beauty to look at!

I have a passion for roman imperial bronzes as well, and that was for many years the focus of my collection. The historical context is and always was my primary driver but I always tried to find examples (funds-permitting) in representative condition, if it just weren't for those prices.....!

This sestertius of Caligula has been in my collection for many years. It is actually quite a bit better in-hand, and has a nice portrait of this demented emperor.

    Caligula, Sestertius AD 37-38,
Obv: C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT, laureate head left,
    REV: SPQR / P P / OB CIVES / SERVATOS within oak-wreath (RIC 37; BMC 38)
