Excellent piece. I'm very happy with my big Balbinus provincial: Cilicia, Tarsus: Balbinus, 238 AD. AE 36 mm, 24.31 gm. Obv: Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Rev: Pupienus(?), radiate, on horseback right, casting javelin at lion leaping right beneath with head left; A in legend, M/K and G/B in fields. SNG Levante Supp. 280 (this coin)
Nice score ro. I've never had a sestertius of his. Looked around for ages for an example to go with his "dear" collegue Pupienus that I had one of, but unsuccessfuly (at least in the price range I was targetting, wanting them to be in a similar condition). In the end I gave up and parted with the Pupienus Pupienus, Sestertius Rome mint, AD 238 IMP CAES M CLOD PVPIENVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right VICTORIA AVGG, Victory standing, head turned on the left, holding wreath in her right hand, palm and drapery in her left hand 24.9 gr 31 mm Ref : RIC IV # 23a, Cohen # 38 Q
I'd be very happy with it as well!! Congrats @Greg Heinrich That's a wonderful example 'Q', I'd be hard pressed to part with one that nice, especially when I 'settled' for the one I posted below---another 'budget' type, but a bit more so LOL
That is a terrific example of Pupienus: portrait, legends and strike are still quite bold and excellent eye-appeal to boot!!!
Another nice find, Ro. Balbinus sestertii are really not easy to find. I am afraid I do not own a Balbinus either, but I did have the opportunity to add this Pupienus to my collection. His sestertii are a bit more available. He has a lovely green color. Pupienus, 238. Sestertius, Rome. Obv: CAES M CLOD PVPIENVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Pupienus to right. Rev: PAX PVBLICA / S C Pax seated left on throne, holding branch in her outstretched right hand and scepter with her left. Cohen 23. RIC 22a.
Poopyanus is very high on my want-list ... sadly, they're usually quite pricey (I will continue to wait in the reeds for my opportunity to score one of these winners)
Coin is fake, I think they have see that good http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=278739
