If NGC wants us to take them seriously, they need to stop lying.

Here's an example of a Neapolitan coin we were convinced was tooled from the photo. I bought it on the chance it wasn't because it would confirm one of Sambon's listings that Taliercio had omitted from her study. When I got the coin I realized it wasn't tooled and it was just the lighting that made the area around the wreath look like it was. Lanz is full of tooled coins, don't get me wrong. But many times the tooling appears much more prominent than it actually is because of the lighting set-up he uses. In this case, I found no evidence of tooling and was very happy to learn it was a legitimate variety from Neapolis.

    Capture.JPG
This is a screen snip so the resolution isn't very good, but I never saved the original Lanz photo file. Somewhere I have the additional photos I took to prove to my coauthor that it wasn't tooled (he is very hard to persuade).

Back to the original coin, I do believe it is tooled, but there is a chance that the lighting is making it look significantly worse than it is and that in hand, it is barely noticeable.

I've just been a spectator with this thread.

South Park, the TV Show, it's current season that is airing is doing a whole season long series on Internet Trolls. So far it's been spot on and very true & look forward to the outcome in the season finale.:troll:

As for this thread. Talking about slabs to us is like waving red to a bull, it just riles us up & best to be avoided.

Our little group here isn't gonna change NGC from dealing with slabs. Hopefully it doesn't turn the ancient coin community into the same world as U.S., which too me is a problem and kills the enjoyment of coins. Only what's printed on paper and adding a huge premium on top of it just so the cost of the slabbing is covered one way or another.:greedy::greedy:

I feel the TPG are the pied piper, whatever music they play & say, most of the kids will follow & with their wallet. "First Strike designations"....lol.

I already collect Action Figures, I don't need to collect coins in plastic too.:vomit:

    I'm Raw Baby!:woot::woot::woot:

By that definition it appears that I can be CALLED a troll. However, it also appears that many posters here are also trolls. Example: A simple question as in Post#99 [1]extraneous qualifies this poster as a troll!

Let's look at the definition further as it applies to this thread:

    1. In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments. You call a disagreement an argument; I'll call it a discussion. Sometime one of the posters will learn something sometimes not; BUT each may discover a different and VALID side exists even though they may not change their personal opinion.

    2. In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by upsetting people. We all know how this goes. If someone gets upset, it ONLY hurts them. Get a set, take a pill, or push the "Ignore" button.

    3. In Internet slang, a troll is a person who posts with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion, often for their own amusement.

Sorry but I'M NOT GUILTY! IMO, very few members post things for this reason; however, I can understand how some folks here that get upset over little things WILL take offense at posts showing great humor and imagination that are directed at them. In that case, many of the members making here fit the definition of a troll - but not by me! :D

...and very well said! However, authentication, attribution, grading, and slabs are all interesting and important topics. They should NOT be the elephant in the room. Slabbing has brought new collectors into your ranks. It has also limited your choices and probably had a major effect on the prices they now bring in their tomb. Let's keep writing about them because their use will increase in the future and there will probably be at least 3-4 Ancient grading services or green sticker companies.:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

Want Proof? Back in the 1980's many famous, professional dealers insisted they would never sell slabs. Now, the cases of the one's who are still alive are FILLED WITH SLABS! ;)

Carausius Brother, can you spare a sestertius?

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the prevalance of slabbed coins is the least of the ancient coin community's problems. We should be more worried about the elitists, nationalists and beaurocrats that want to take away our right to collect ancient coins, both "raw" and slabbed. Now THAT's a problem!

Funny, eh? ..... I totally agree that whenever a thread about slabbing pops-up, it's always a total gong-show!!

I hate slabs ... others love slabs (it is a very polar and useless debate)

The topic is almost as bad as discussing politics or religion ...

=> I suggest that we never talk about slabbed coins ever again!!

For the record...I HATE SLABS TOO...for any coins! But they are fun to talk about. Without slabs, no TPGS GTG.

Yea, Well. The plastic will cost you, and that is all you are buying. Not the coin, thats for sure! Comparisons (yes, to my listings, but hey, what other dealers will tell the truth?):

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/182-175-BC-...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Sold, $26. BTW, ANACS has the coin upside down!!!!!!!

I've sold countless of these, $5 and up, I guess currently a couple for $20:

    https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ke...asty_175__119_bc_ae_5_zhu/633765/Default.aspx

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/7-23-AD-Hsi...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Sold, $17.50. Again, I have sold many $3 and up, one current offering:

    https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ke...ng_mang_7__23_ad_ae_5_zhu/633145/Default.aspx

Its just a scam. Sellers offering simple junk worth $1 or so (often less from the photos I have seen). Honestly I cant see where they recover the slabbing fees, time and effort. I mean, why slab a truly horrible example when it would be easy and cheap to slab one which is EF to UNC??
