Just before our mini summer vacation I bought a Bowers and Merena advertising token on Ebay. The reverse of the token shows the obverse of the Libertas Americana medal. As far as the design elements go it appears to be exactly as the medal. I never noticed before but the Liberty Cap seems awfully small. Was it meant to be worn later by infant Hercules on the obverse of the actual medal? Perhaps to be worn after he crushed a few more serpents? Or is it really an acorn and not a cap? I swear it looks like an acorn to me on the token and images of the medal. Is that what it is?
I would venture that at the time the Artist created the design, that is how the Artist perceived the importance of the various devices the artist wanted to convey...to the French, possibly. After all, Juil in lieu of July was not used because of lack of space to allow July to fit.
Here's the real thing. I think the size of the cap is a matter of artistic license. A larger one would not have fit in the space.
Funny you posted this now because yesterday I was looking at some coins the French Mint has been making. Each year since 2020 they have one coin celebrating American Independence and this is one of them. I like it but didn't buy this one. I ordered two others.
