As a woodworker, I know that lacquer is the easiest finish to lay down... Also the easiest to remove. Either lacquer thinner or acetone will do the job. Acetone would likely be a bit safer to use. Not as explosive as lacquer thinner..... I refinished my wife's make-up table and laid a beautiful lacquer finish on it. Five years later you can see all the places where her nail polish remover (acetone) dripped on the table and left bare wood.
I agree that the lacquer thinner is more dangerous to use than Acetone. We do have acetone in our bodies, some very very low levels and some quite odor producing. Acetone does not react with copper like a crazy chemist claimed once a long time ago when he received money to boost another company's chemical that was not as good.
Acetone is best and it needs to the industrial kind, not mail polish remover. It will do the same as lacquer to inner will damage the coin.
Why do some people object to a good soak in acetone, which from EVERYTHING I read does not alter silver, it's finish, or luster? Do some just think glue, tape, or filth just needs to be worn like a badge of disgust? I'm being serious. There are people who think like that.
