I'm 99.9% sure this is a fake. Was hard not to burst out laughing when I saw this for sale on e-bay. But I figured I might as well run this past you guys. Let me know what you think. "$1 FRN 1981A RARE ERROR NOTE / MAJOR SHIFT ERROR" http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3415&item=3944503659&rd=1
but how is that possible? i thought for sure that the third printing is done with only one plate. how can only part of the third print be shifted and not the rest?
Actually there are three different plates used for printing currency. Check out http://www.donckelly.com Go to paper money for sale, and then click on error notes. Some amazing errors are out there.
The Federal Reserve number (2) in the NW corner and SE corner are imprinted at the same time as the Federal Reserve Bank seal, aren't they? On this bill, the 2 on the left is very low, superimposed over part of the serial number, along with the Federal Reserve bank seal. But, the 2 on the right is properly placed. Also, the seal, which is too low, still looks too high in relationship to the adjacent number. This would seem to indicate that these 3 devices were imprinted seperately. Most puzzling. Doesn't look fake, but I can't see how this could have happened.
It is genuine. The federal reserve bank number is normally printed in all FOUR corners of the note. So the one you see in the lower right corner is actually the 2 that is supposed to be in the upper right corner. You will see that the one from the upper right is missing. The 2 on the left IS correctly positioned with respect to the reserve back seal and is high compared to where the number should be on the lower left. US paper money is printed in four steps. Frst the back in green, then the front in black, ten the federal reserve bank seal and numbers in black, and finally the serial numbers a treasuy seal in green.
