All your thoughts and knowledge!! Got a 1974 Kennedy Half no mint from the bank. -It weights almost a gram short at 10.4g -It’s close to 2.5mm smaller then other halves at about 28mm -the reeds are sharper and look like solid brass/copper blend sandwiched between tin. Iv looked at US Planchets and as for the other countries we minted for in ‘74, Liberia,Nepal,Panama,Philippines etc etc only Panama was minted in Philly and the planchet was to light. Take a look at picks and help a guy out here.
This is interesting. It looks at first glance like someone filed the rims down... but then how to explain the super-sharp reeding? I'll be watching this space for more info!
Do you have a thickness gauge or tool to measure the thickness of each? I tried to do so on the screen, but not as accurate. I think the coin is thicker by a tiny amount and due to being in a revolving device, but it would take a gauge to prove. Jim
That would work for sure, but I suspect if the coin was layered, it would blow separated piece around the room. I use a Perspex shield for such fun things as I had to use one for the college's electron microscope back in the 60s
Here's an example of a half struck on a quarter planchet. Yours does not match. If that's where you were going with this. https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/4436579-002/63/ I agree, it's an interested one though.
Hey, not to get your hopes up, but it sure looks a lot like this: https://coins.ha.com/itm/errors/197...-the-errorpalooza-collection/a/60197-91166.s# I wish it would say which planchet though. Could be several. Here's another: https://coins.ha.com/itm/errors/197...5-yuan-pieces-for-the-republic-o/a/422-7650.s
Interesting indeed! I can't think of a way that a US half could be struck from a US die in a US dollar, AND have a diameter that much smaller, AND still have sharp reeding. If it had been electromagnetically shrunk, we'd see visible distortions on the faces.
Taiwan is the only planchet of all I saw on the pdf file I’m uploading that was in ‘74 at Philly Mint and is close in weight. It’s tuff to find pics of the reeds to compare. There is a lot of info in the file to go over. I thank you for your time and knowledge. My research shall continue. Thanks again
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2962.html The diameter matches the Taiwan 5 New Dollars at 29mm but weighs 9.5g. Thickness 2mm. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces6918.html Kennedy half weighs 11.34g, diameter 30.61mm, thickness 2.15mm. If your scale is accurate, it's 9.5% overweight. The collar issue is why I originally thought it may have been shrunk, but that doesn't explain why it's 9.6% light vs the Kennedy. In the first photo it looks marginally thicker too, when it should be .15mm thinner. Curious.
Yes my scale is accurate. I verified with other known weights. I agree with everything you are putting out there. I did a lot of research before posting. I too am very curious. That’s why I titled this “it’s all wrong” cause With all info I could find, everything being just a bit off in every aspect I was hurting my brain that’s when I posted.
Yes Taiwan is the closest yet that is listed at 9.5g which is same difference in opposite direction of what it should be. Which is why I’m still searching
