I'm continuing to re-evaluate my collections and purge some of the coins that don't make sense under my current collecting goals. With that in mind, I'm breaking up my complete New Zealand predecimal set and selling most of them, just keeping a few of the best examples of each denomination. But before I downsize I wanted to share them with the group. Here are the half pennies. I'll update later as I get more of the denominations scanned. Half pennies for New Zealand were first issued in 1940 and the last issue was in 1965. They were issued in most years but a few years were skipped. I have the full date set and I'm not aware of any varieties besides proofs. Mintages are low by American standards, ranging from 240,000 to around 5 million.
I've read that for one of the years (1955 or 1956 maybe) that there is a very rare strapless or with strap variety - I don't remember the exact details but it was mentioned in Jerome Remick's book though I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else.
I believe it's for the penny. It's listed in Krause. I've never been able to identify the strap varieties of various British Commonwealth coins though.
It's definitely there for the penny and sixpence (I think) at least but Jerome Remick's book reports it for the halfpenny too.
