I think I might have messed up. I've determined AFTER my purchase (aren't I the bright one) that it is possible to FAKE an ASE 20th anneversary set by buying empty boxes and filling them. I might even have bought a fake one. I was going to send it to (a grader) so it can be labeled and graded.. but then I thought.. HOW can they (or I) know for sure that the set is real? am I just stuck with a set that is ungradable? Do they require a sealed box from the mint in order to grade a set as 20th anneversary?? My MS coin is severely toned, but the RP is beautiful! Maybe a 70. tia
From reading other posts, it has to be a sealed box from the Mint to get the 20th anniversary designation. If it is opened, you can only get it for the RP.
Dragon is correct. From the PCGS site: 20th Anniversary designation after November 11th: To get all coins in the set designated 20th Anniversary, the sets must come to PCGS sealed in the original government boxes they were shipped in. The box must be unopened. If the sets or loose coins arrive in open boxes, the only coin to receive the 20th Anniversary would be the Reverse Proof as this coin is currently only offered in the 3pc set. The other 2 coins are available in other sets or individually. (This is subject to change if the government decides to offer the Reverse Proof individually at a later date.)
I should have done a simple search.. thanks for the info guys. This must be the reason that the opened sets only command a bit of a premium over the price of the RP alone. If that exact phrasing is still on PCGS site, I gather that the mint has never offered the 20th annev.RP individually. That's good news.
I'm not sure what you mean by a "fake set." If you have a reverse proof, a proof and a 2006 W unc, you have a set ....nothing fake about it. It might not be the same 3 coins that came in the box from the mint but that doesn't make it fake. When folks send in 10-20 sets for grading the coins get all mixed up, they don't keep the sets together so it's no biggie if your 3 coins weren't together when they came from the mint last year.
apperently some people think it is more valuable if the mint put together a perfect set than if joe smo did.
